F. 27:1-26 JESUS BEFORE PILATE
1. 27:1-2 JEWS COUNSEL HIS DEATH

Now when morn was come, all the chief priests and the elders

of the people took counsel against :Jesus to put him to death:

2. 27:3-10 JUDAS HANGS SELF
a. 27:3-4a JUDAS RETURNS THE BETRAYAL PRICE

Then Judas, who delivered him up, seeing that he was condemned,

c. 27:5 JUDAS' RESPONSE

And he cast down the silver-piecesinto the sanctuary,

andwithdrew; and he went away andhanged himself.
d. 27:6 WHAT TO DO WITH THE BETRAYAL MONEY?

And the chief priests took the piecesof silver, andsaid,

It is not lawful to put them into the treasury, since it is theprice of blood.
e. 27:7 THE FIELD OF BLOOD

And they took counsel, andbought with them

the field of the potter, to bury :strangers in.
f. 27:8 Wherefore that :field was called, Field of blood, unto this day.

g. 27:9-10 FULFILLMENT OF JEREMIAH'S PROPHECY!

Then was fulfilled what was spoken through Jeremiah the prophet,

saying, And they took the thirty silver-pieces, the price of him
tou te-ti-meMEnou [5091], hon e-tiMEsan-to aPO huiON Is-raEL;
that was priced, whom they priced on the part of thesons of Israel;

10and gave them for the potter's :field, as theLord appointed me.
3. 27:11-26 PILATE'S PART IN JESUS' TRIAL
a. 27:11a PILATE QUESTIONS JESUS

Now :Jesus stood before the governor:

and the governor asked him, saying, Are you the King of the Jews?

c. 27:12 And when he was accused by the chief priests and elders, he answered nothing.

d. 27:13 PILATE AGAIN QUESTIONS JESUS

Then says :Pilate to him, Do you not hear how many thingsthey witness against you?
e. 27:14 And he gave him no answer, not even to one word: so that the governor marveled greatly.

f. 27:15 THE OPTION FACING PILATE

Now at a feast the governor was accustomed to release

g. 27:16 And they had then a notable prisoner, called Barabbas.

h. 27:17 PILATE OFFERS THE JEWS A CHOICE

When therefore they were gathered :Pilate said to them,

Whom will you that I release to you? :Barabbas, or Jesus the onecalled Christ?
I. 27:18 For he knew that for envy they had delivered him up.

j. 27:19 THE DREAM OF PILATE'S WIFE

And while he was sitting on the judgment-seat,

his :wife sent unto him, saying, Have you nothing to dowith that :righteous man;

for I have suffered many thingstoday in a dream because of him.
k. 27:20 JEWISH LEADERS INFLUENCE THE CROWDS

Now the chief priests and the elders persuaded the crowds

that they should ask for :Barabbas, and destroy :Jesus.
l. 27:21a But the governor answered, andsaid to them, Which of the two will you that I release to you?

m. 27:21b And they said, :Barabbas. hoi de EIpan, Ton Ba-rabBAN.
n. 27:22a :Pilate says to them, What then shall I do to Jesus the onecalled Christ?

o. 27:22b All say, Let him be crucified. LEgous-sin PANtes, Stau-roTHEto[4717]
p. 27:23a And he said, Why, what evil has he done?

q. 27:23b But they cried out exceedingly, saying, Let him be crucified.

r. 27:24 PILATE'S PROTEST

So :Pilate seeing that he prevailed nothing, but rather thata tumult was arising, took water,

andwashed his:hands before the crowd, saying,
I am innocent of this :blood, see you to it.
s. 27:25 And all the people answered andsaid, His :blood beupon us, and upon our :children.

t. 27:26 PILATE'S DECISION

Then he released :Barabbas to them;
ton de IeSOUN phra-gelLOsas [5417] paREdo-ken HIna stau-roTHE [4717].
but :Jesus he scourged anddelivered to be crucified.
NOTE: 27:3 - In this section we see a classic example of the two Greek words for repentance. Truerepentance is a “change of mind”, me-taNOIa - but Judas here has applied to him “me-taMElo-mai” - to be sorrythat his action turned out the way it did. This is nottrue repentance as in Acts 2:38. Sadly, much of so-called repentance in the church of today is of the Judas' nature, and will cause those moving in this way to share the same eventual fate with Judas. It would be wellfor allof us to ask - “Is my repentance truly valid - which will eventuate in a changeof life-style - or - merely sorry because I have been caught and found out as a hypocrite?”
27:5-6 - Then look at the hypocrisy of the chief priests and Jewish leaders in the disposition of the thirty pieces of silver that Judas returned. It was illegalfor them to put this money in the treasury, which is “Korban”; - but not- in their estimation - to illegally put Jesus the Son of God, the Messiah, to death! Thisis stinkinghypocrisy, and unfortunately exists still among religious leaders of allreligions today.
27:11-26 - This section clearly relates Pilate's part in Jesus' death. Did he join in illegal action? Yes. Was his sin as great as that of the Jewish leaders and people? No. Did the sin of the Jewish leaders exceed that of the people? Yes. Yet - the sin of the people was most serious. When Pilate washed his hands of responsibility for this egregious miscarriage of justice - did this clearhim? Not at all. Jesus told Pilate that the sin of the Jewish leaders was greater than his sin - yet by this he was notabsolved.
But the people's response to Pilate was most serious. They said: “His :blood be upon us, and upon our :children!”Did this follow through? Yes. Their temple was destroyed in 70 AD, and for 1900 years Jews were scattered in the Diaspora among the nations of the world, even enduring the Holocaust to convict the nations to give them back their homeland, though greatly decimated. Then - miracle of miracles - in 1948 they were back in their own land, speaking their own national language - Hebrew, not Yiddish. Has anything ever of this nature been heard of before? Never! And in spite of 7 national wars to dislodge them from their own land - the land Godgave to Jacob as an everlasting covenant- they have notbeen driven into the sea, and are yetin their own land. Let the United Nations, United Europe, the Middle East Nations, many third world nations, and even many in the United States stand against God and His Word in this area - yet - the proof of the pudding is in the eating - and when the Lord returnsas Lord of lords and King of kings - manyshocks will come to manyat that time.
